Meeting 3/2/04 Keeps going, and going - to China and from China
The meeting began with the singing of Amazing Grace and Marion
Griffin had the invocation. President Dean began the meeting and
reminded us it was cancer awareness month and that we should all
remember the "golden rule" especially in regards to Pancake
Day. Scott Redding updated us on Pancake Day progress and Lynn Jones
gave the report of 43 members and 1 guest in attendance. Jim Gardner
was the business spotlight and gave the history of Energizer Battery
Co. in Asheboro. Energizer has been in Asheboro since 1948. The plant
employs 1100 people in the Asheboro area and exports some parts to
China. Ron Jones then introduced Eric Reiss as our speaker. Eric
moved to North Carolina in 1989 and has been teaching T'ai Chi
Ch'uan, an acient Chinese martial art discipline through a system of
exercise, meditation, and self-defense at Randolph Community College.
Eric told the group about many of the benefits of the exercise art
form. There are many various health advantages and it is a good
system of self-defense. Eric also had the group participate in
several exercises to work off their dinner and relax. He then showed
us defensive moves by defending himself against Brad Crumpler and
Mike Hunter. Ken Gallimore was the lucky split-the-pot winner. We all
felt the energy in our fingertips, if not from the T'ai Chi, from the
Energizer batteries provided to everyone by Jim. Reporting: Chris
Griffin, Advisors Financial Center.
Meeting 2/24/04 Our meeting kicked off with V.P. Scott Redding as our
master of ceremonies. John Matkins lead our singing along with the
help of Rusty Hamond on Piano and Stan Guest and Lanny Cox on sax.
Scott Redding led us in the pledge while Matt Styers gave the
invocation. We had 57 Kiwanians in attendance and 7 guests. Those
guests included two Key Club members, Austin Spencer and Robert Cox.
We also had an interclub contingency from High Point led by Bill
Buckingham. Kent Strickland introduced our business spotlight of the
night as Frankie Morton of "Keepers of Time". "Keepers
of Time" is located in downtown Asheboro on Sunset Ave. The
retailer makes, sells, and repairs all sorts of clocks including
grandfather clocks with hand crafted woodworking. John Matkins
introduced one of our own for the program. David Smith gave an
excellent program about the work of Crime Stoppers in Randolph County
chapter. He explained the invaluable work that this group does to
help the police capture crimes in our area. The group is funded
purely from donations of which the Kiwanis Club just recently donated
$1,000. In the last two years, Crime Stoppers has helped to solve
numerous crimes including bank robbery, murder, drug trafficking and
one call helped a school resource officer to capture a 38 caliber
pistol from a local middle school. This is truly a worthwhile cause.
Also, a special thanks to Don Blanton, who, for the last 15 years has
served as Crime Stoppers treasurer. At the close of business for the
night, Steve Bulla won $7. Way to go Steve. Don't spend it all in one place.
