The night's meeting kicked off the night with Darrell Lewis and Rusty
Hammond leading us in a few songs. President Dean led the pledge of
allegiance and Charles Link gave the invocation. We had 40 Kiwanians
and 4 guests including Mike and Donna Miller who came to hear the
speaker. Dinner consisted of salisbury steak, chicken strips, mashed
potatoes, corn, green beans, and a roll. Veneda Brown introduced Russ
Williams, (no relation to Venus and Serena) the Executive Director of
the N.C. Zoological Society, who was also accompanied by his wife
Cheryl. Russ talked about his recent trip to Tanzania to climb Mount
Kilimanjaro. The trip up the 20,000 ft. mountain took nine days to go
up and two to come down. It was a very interested trip. Jack Mitchell
drew the lucky ticket stub, however, his luck ran out when he drew
the king of diamonds instead of the ace of spades. With that, the
meeting was adjourned.
6-15-2004
Meeting was called to order by Pres. Dean Lail. Dotty and Darrell
Lewis led the club in song. John Matkins did the invocation. Dinner
was served: black eye peas, collard greens, tomatoes, and ocra mix,
lasagna, turkey, and peach or strawberry pie. We had 40 Kiwanians
present with one guest. Earlie Hill spoke about an Interclub visit to
the Murrow Club in Greesboro. He was accompanied by Dean Lail, Lynn
Jones, and Marion Griffin. Dean wanted to remind everyone of the tour
of Victory Junction that will take place on 6/16/04. Club members
wanting to go should be at the Level Cross Community Center by 10:30.
The tour starts at 11:00. ( by the time you get this, everyone had a
great time ) Steve Bulla introduced our speakers: Darrell Lewis (yes
that one) and Charles Havens (yes, that one too). The spoke of their
mission trip to Honduras and Alaska. Being no further business, the
meeting was adjourned.

Safety First - Buckle Up! Here's one of the signs Asheboro Kiwanis
supplied for area schools at parking lot exits. This was a great
project led by Lynn Jones.

6/1/04 Meeting - Marvin Caviness had the invocation. Secretary Lynn
reported 45 Kiwanians and 2 guests. Lynn reminded the ball teams to
send one person to AVS to get take out meals for games on Tuesday
night. Frank Havens presented an update on Victory Junction
indicating the $250,000 goal will be met. Fran Hamilton, Randleman
Middle School media specialist, shared her experiences in the
"People to People" and teacher exchange program visiting
Japanese schools. She also talked about her trip to Russia with the
State Department.
The Japanese are pro-American since America helped rebuild their
country after the war. Schools differ in that the Japanese style is
more rote memorization rather than developing thinking skills. Their
college entrance exams determine which university they attend and the
university determines the career path. There is extreme pressure to excel.
Her view of Russia is that it is a third world country, focused on
community living. Siberia is poor in resources but has very good
students. Everyone student learns to speak English and school
facilities are always open to everyone in the community. Minutes by
Lynne Qualls
Split the pot on the 2nd ticket (obviously #1 had left) gave Kent
Strickland an opportunity to try for the lucky card. He did not walk
away with any riches.
Silent Auction - Marion Griffin had the high bid for the Lenton Slack
print of the Pisgah Covered Bridge. The entire $25 amount will go to
benefit Victory Junction. Marion is also a member of the Hero 45 club
of Victory Junction contributors. If you would like to be a hero like
Marion, please let Dean Lail know.
Terrific Kids - McCrary Elementary recognized a lot of terrific kids
again this year. We attended their awards day but the certificates
were to be mailed.

McLaughlin who is English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
Coordinator for Asheboro City Schools. Dr. McLaughlin came to her
position three years ago from Winston-Salem. She reported that the
Asheboro System is now 26% Hispanic. She says she sees both challenge
and opportunity in dealing with a changing community and commended
the Asheboro area for the acceptance it has shown toward the growing
Hispanic population. Dr. McLaughlin asked the question "Where
are you from?" and noted that, unless you're a native American,
you also came from somewhere else. She pointed out that most of the
people coming to the U.S. today are coming for much the same reasons
our ancestors did.
Dr. McLaughlin then introduced Juan Rios who is from Panama. Mr. Rios
is teaching ESL at Asheboro High and is also president of the Latino
Coalition in Asheboro. He described the mission of the coalition as
working to meet the social, educational, and cultural needs of the
Latino community. They have partnered with Randolph Hospital, United
Way, Randolph Community College, the Mental Health Association, the
Cooperative Extension Service and other organizations in various
endeavors. Mr. Rios also noted that he was honored to be speaking to
