2004 Court is in Session - 1/6/2004
President Dean Lail rang the bell and Tom Cunningham began the
meeting in song with "Broadway" and Oh Susanna". Matt
Styers had the invocation for the first meal of 2004.
Dean introduced Pam Hill who introduced Judy Eubanks who is the Teen
Court coordinator in Randolph County effecting ages 10-18 for
criminal offenses so they will not be repeat offenders. Repeat
offense rate is only 8.7% after completing this constructive program.
Cheryl Benford, the Juvenile Restitution coordinator, then spoke to
us about the monetary restitution component now in place to repay the
victims of the juvenile offenders. These programs help free up the
court systems for more serious offenders. Programs emphasize
accountability, justice and education. Judy and Cheryl seemed to be
committed to helping the youth of Randolph County not become
long-term offenders but hopefully upstanding citizens.
Lynn then gave the secretary's report and tld of the Kiwanis
attendance of 49 members and 3 guests. Jack Mitchell drew the lucky
card but couldn't draw the lucky card to start the year a winner.

Darrell Lewis, Dean Lail, Russell Walker and (Earlie Hill) visited
with the Asheboro Golden K club. The Golden K reported quite a lot of
volunteer work with meals on wheels.
Dean was the program speaker and shared the goals of Asheboro Kiwanis
including supporting the Golden K. He also spoke about the textile
industry and global trade issues stating that the Bush administration
is trying to take several positive steps to protect the industry and
provide assistance to workers who've lost their jobs, even though
they are pushing for more free trade agreements such as CAFTA. He
also reviewed the democratic presidential candidates' position on
trade issues indicating that John Edwards seems to have the most
favorable plans in his opinion followed by Wesley Clark.

Start the new year off on the right foot, with a little smile. Hope
you all have a very happy, healthful and prosperous new year.
It is well documented that for every minute you exercise, you add a
minute to your life. This enables you, at 85 years of age, to spend
an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month!
If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
I joined a health club last year and spent about 400 bucks. Haven't
lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.
The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.
Split-The-Pot
Now, be a winner every week. Buy your tickets at the door for a
chance to win just by having your number drawn. That's right, the
cards are out the window, temporarily at least, as we give the old
method a try.
