July 1, 2008 Meeting
o Thanks to Rusty Hammond and John Matkins for getting the meeting
off to a good start. Don Monroe led us in prayer.
o 35 Kiwanians, 7 at the ballpark, and 3 guests (Mike Harmon's wife
Michelle, O.C. Burrow's wife Shelly and Jimmy Hill's daughter Ally)
joined us for dinner.
o A Kiwanis Playground Committee was announced and will meet to
discuss equipment for the new park.
o This evening's program was a detailed discussion by Eddie Burks and
Frank Havens on their recent trip to the International Kiwanis
Convention in Orlando.
Board Meeting
Approved the membership application of Tony Hoover.
o Approved a concession stand bonus of $250 for Brandie Tew to be
presented at the end of baseball season. (It's a surprise.)
o Approved a $100 contribution to the Asheboro Football Officials
Association for scholarships.
o Elected Rowe, Burks, and Jones as delegates to the District
Convention.
July 8th Meeting
o As he has done so many times, Earlie Hill led a group of
35 Kiwanians (8 at the ballpark) and 1 guest "Ah...
without music" in his usual excellent manner and Charles
Link led us in prayer.
July 15" Meeting
o The songs were sung with beautiful music as Dottie joined and
Earlie Hill to lead us in song.
o It was mentioned that there are only 246 days until "Pancake
Day 2009"
o Jack Mitchell gave us a Wyndham Golf update for our volunteers.
o Pete Abbott went only a short distance into his "Kiwanian of
the Night" before everyone knew it was Charles Lee. It was an
easy guess because Charles gives so much back to his community!
July 22nd Meeting
Mike Harmon and Rusty Hammond led the group in song as Wayne Tolar
led us in prayer.
o This evening's attendance was 42 Kiwanians, 1 guest and as usual, 7
ballpark workers!
o Canton Cheek did a little "walk down memory lane" with
several football programs from past years on the tables. Comments
about the famous "1958" team were discussed in detail at
many tables.
o Pete Abbott also walked down memory lane with a very unique look
into the life of this evening's "Special Kiwanian," Jim
Marlowe.
o A very interesting program was introduced by Carlton Cheek who had
a very experienced, but "new" Asheboro High Football coach,
Dee Bulla talk about the upcoming season.
July 29th Meeting
o In President's Dave's absence, Immediate Past President Mike called
the meeting to order.
o Tom Cunningham led 32 Kiwanians and 2 guests in song. Matt Styers
delivered the invocation. Five members were at the ballpark.
o Several members were absent due to the alcohol referendum.
o David Poe introduced Brent McKinney and J.D. Stewart with the
Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation. Brent shared the
history of public transportation in Triad and how PART buses are now
transporting people between Asheboro and Greensboro.
Presidents Corner. . .As the old song goes, "Summer time and the
living is easy...!" Time has a way of slipping by us before we
know it. As we head into August, vacations are coming to an end;
children will soon be going back to school; we will soon be looking
forward to football, cooler weather and what a new year will bring.
Perhaps all that looking ahead comes with getting closer to
retirement andlor old age. I certainly qualify for both! I believe it
was Eddie Burks, our incoming president, who said to me one evening,
"I don't think other clubs have the kind of laughs we have."
One of the great things in life for me has been to be able to laugh
at myself. Whether it was the comment made one evening about my being
able to use my Penn State diploma as a "handicapped parking
pass" or tearing up the State Employees' Credit Union one
evening calling it "the Security Union of.. ." (forgive me
Lynn) or working at the ball games and hollering back and forth with
Charles Lee or kidding with Pete Abbott as he tells us about our
"Special Kiwanian" of the evening, I hope this year has
been as much fun for you as it has been for me! I will long cherish
the honor you all have given me in being selected to serve as
president. Please keep up your great spirit of caring for others!
Blessed beyond what I deserve!
