Meeting 11/4/03
Two good songs and an invocation with an "unspoken prayer
request" started our election-day meeting. The City of
Asheboro had elections for the school
board and city council while we Asheboro
Kiwanian's elected Chris Griffin to take
a spot on our board. Visitors included an interclub
from Greensboro, David DeVriend, guest of
Mike Stack and Robbie
Cox who was the featured spotlight
business. Robbie is the third generation
to work in his family business, Cox's
Harley-Davidson, Inc. We learned how this business that started with
humble beginnings was recently recognized as being number 1 in the
nation in customer satisfaction and award ratings.
Robbie attributed his family's success to
hard work and by treating all staff members like family. Our program
was Henry "Looking Bear" Free. He is the leader of the
Uwharrie Native American Flute Circle and
provided our group with Indian music from his flute and drums. Lynn
Jones announced that we had 52 Kiwanian's
and 7 guests in attendance and in the next week Jeff Miller is
celebrating his birthday and Marvin and Helen Caviness
are celebrating their anniversary. Reporter, Mike Hunter

The Keyauwee Program Center near Sophia
just outside of Randolph County is near the site of the village of
Keyauwee Indians.
The Keyauwee do not appear to have been
noted by white men before 1701 when they were found in a
palisaded village about 30 miles
northeast of the Yadkin River near the
present Highpoint, Guilford County. At
that time they were preparing to join the Saponi
and Tutelo for better protection against
their enemies, and, shortly afterward, together with the last
mentioned tribes, the Occaneechi, and the
Shakori, they moved toward the
settlements about Albemarle Sound.
