Meeting10/28/03

Ready Rusty and Delay Darrell got our last meeting in October started with excellent music and song.  Dan Goble led the invocation.  Visitors included Brian G. from the Key Club and Al Morton who was the spotlight business.  Al told us about Gold Hill Road Landscape Supply and Landfill.  His company provides a variety of services for disposing of construction waste and debris.  He sells all types of mulch and top soil.  The City of Asheboro is one of his larger customers, and he thanked our program speaker, Mayor Jarrell for supplying tree limb debris to keep his wood chip supply for boilers going strong to three states.  Mayor Jarrell was past president and charter member of the Asheboro High Key Club and past president of the McCall, South Carolina Kiwanis Club while working for CP&L.  He told us about some of the City’s accomplishments and projects including Lake Lucas Park, a 500 ft. runway extension, and the ongoing N. Fayetteville Street widening.  All this and more despite the $1 million budget shortfall he faced 6 months after entering office.    He complemented Energizer and Unilever Best Foods for accepting incentives to stay and expand in Asheboro with a combined $90 million capital investment.  Upcoming projects include a facelift for Historic “Uptown” and dealing with some 100 year old water lines and 40 year old sewer lines.  Reporter Cunningham was off this week performing with Swing On at the Library.  Dean Lail.

Joke

A corporate jet was landing in Asheboro.  The pilot says to the co-pilot, “My God, that’s a short runway.”  Co-pilot: “You’re not kidding.”  Pilot: “This will be the trickiest landing ever.  When I say go, put the engine in reverse, put the flaps down full, we’ll stomp on the brakes and pray to God.”  So when the wheels touched, the two went into action and mercifully landed in a screeching halt just at the end of the runway.  Gathering their composure the pilot said “That has to be the shortest runway in the world.”  The co-pilot responded, “Yeah, but will you look how wide it is.”

Shoes for Underprivileged Children

Thanks to Dan Goble for arranging new shoes for three young people this month.  It should make us all feel good especially with the grateful thank you notes we receive from the hearts of these children.

Partnership for Children

Pauline McKee, executive director of the Partnership for Children, thanked us for sponsoring the Welcome Baby bag project for every newborn in Asheboro.  We are also co-sponsoring their float in the Christmas Parade this year.  The theme is the “Gift of Reading.”  Kiwanis volunteers (we all need a little exercise) are encouraged to walk along with the float and hand out books to children.

Mark Dec. 5th on your calendar for the Asheboro Christmas parade.

Wow!

A big thank you to 18 Kiwanians who signed up for bell ringing on the first passing of the signup sheet.  We’re halfway to staffing all the slots.  We also got a call from the Key club with their desire to fill in some slots.  Bell ringing starts Nov. 15th.

Klarion Notes

Many of you have commented favorably on the new electronic Klarion.  Don’t let your spouse or family members miss out.  If they’re like my family, they read the mail before I do.  I think it helps to let the family know what’s going on at Kiwanis.  So forward it on or print it out to keep support on the home front strong.

If you do not wish to receive this email, please let me know.
