Leaders Past and Present
MEETING 0CT0BER 7, 2003
New leader, President Dean launched us into our new year and called on Don Monroe and Rusty Hammond for music. The invocation was given by Russell Walker. Carl Jordan reported on contacts with two formerly active members, Witty Adkins and Lewis Ruland (past presidents from '51 and '77 respectively.) Our guests from AHS Key Club, Veronica Hollenbeck and Lisa Hatley, were introduced. Past President, Pete Abbott, continued to express his appreciation to those members who had been of special importance to his tenure. Those he named tonight were Bob Fritz, Lynne Qualls, David Smith, Jimmy Hill, and Ken Gallimore. Dan Goble and Frank Havens are organizing an interclub and by a set of unusual circumstances are going to be the program the day of their visit. Brett Thomas, as acting Secretary, reported the attendance at 46 members and 3 guests. President Dean introduced as our spotlight business for the evening an associate from Sapona Mfg. who has turned a lifelong hobby into a business. Lynn Huffman discussed the subtle factors that are involved in creating a fishing rod that will perfectly match the needs of the user. He emphasized that the custom rod will probably cost more than a commercial one, but for the person who is really into the sport the better performance may be worth the investment. President Dean concluded the meeting with a review of important objectives for the coming year.
We were urged to focus on the following projects:
1. Support for Victory Junction
2. Young Children's program
3. Coordinate with Asheboro Golden K
4. New Business Spotlights
5. Develop a web site for the club
Chris Ward was lucky enough to have his ticket drawn but not lucky enough to pick the right card.

Invite 3
This week I asked three people to visit Kiwanis. Surprisingly, I got a positive response from all 3. One in particular, Celena Reynolds with the Support our Students afterschool program at the YMCA expressed a great interest in being a member. She was formerly in Circle K at Appalachian University and was recognized as an outstanding Vice President and Newsletter Editor. Celena is planning a campout with 40 of her afterschool students on Friday night, Oct. 24th. If you are interested in volunteering to help or loaning tents, sleeping bags, etc. please let me know.
I met Celena through the National Afterschool Alliance, and it's annual Lights On Afterschool event, which is designed to call attention to afterschool programs and the resources required to keep the lights on and the doors open. Interestingly, Arnold Schwarzenegger is Chairman of this event. The Asheboro YMCA held an open house this past Saturday to mark the event. They highlighted two programs, YMCA Afterschool for grades K-5 and Support our Students (S.O.S.) for four area middle schools. - by Dean Lail, Club President
