ORIENTATION INFORMATION

Club Meetings

The Kiwanis Club of Asheboro meets every Tuesday night at 6:45 at the AVS Banquet Centre. Most members arrive by 6:30 in order to have time for fellowship with other members. Name badges are placed close to the door, and all members are expected to wear their badge. We begin our meetings with singing, the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, an invocation, recognition of guests, and a buffet meal. At 7:15, the meeting is called back to order for a brief business session during which announcements are made and members are recognized for birthdays, anniversaries, perfect attendance, and achievements. Following the program, which usually lasts about thirty minutes, the meeting is adjourned at 8:00.

Attendance

Regular attendance at meetings and participation in other club activities is expected of all active members. Many of our members achieve perfect attendance. Meetings that are missed can be made up by attending one of the following: a regular board meeting (the first Tuesday each month after the regular meeting), a meeting of another Kiwanis club, a Key C lub m eeting, o r b y p articipating i n a planned project of the club. Senior status may be granted by the Board to a member who has been a Kiwanian for at least ten years which reduces the attendance requirements to only three meetings per quarter.

Club Finances

Funds to operate the club come mostly from dues paid by members and are kept in the administrative account. Dues are $108.00 per quarter and include the cost of meals, International and District dues, and administrative expenses of the club. There is a new member processing fee of $15.00 charged by Kiwanis International. Funds generated through fund-raisers are kept in a service account. These funds can only be used for charitable and educational activities of the club.

Special Events

There are at least three meetings each year where we invite our spouses or other special guests to attend. These occur at Christmas, Valentines, and the end of September at the installation banquet. We u sually have an a ctivity e ach year that involves the entire family. All meal charges for guests ($9.00) are billed to the member bringing the guests. A guest brought to a meeting as a prospective member or as part of the program is considered a guest of the club and not charged for their meal.

Club Activities

Our club was chartered in 1928 with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Sanford. Since that time, our club has made many significant contributions to the Asheboro community. Kiwanians are known for their work in the community. Although some of our contributions to the community are monetary, much of it is given in volunteer hours. Some of the current activities we are involved in are listed below.

1.) Pancake Day: Usually held the third Tuesday in March, this day long event is our major fund- raiser for the year. Every member is expected to give as many hours as possible to this event.

2.) American Legion Baseball: We sponsor our local Legion team by providing money for team expenses, hiring coaches, selling tickets to the games, selling concessions, and operating the public address system and scoreboard at the games.

3.) Terrific Kids: This is a program to recognize children in the Asheboro City School system for making improvements in one of several areas of their school life.

4.) Adopt-A-Highway: We keep a one mile stretch of Highway 220 By-pass free from litter. We usually have trash pickups quarterly.

5.) Bell Ringing: We man the collection kettles during the Christmas Season to raise money for the Salvation Army.

6.) Food Distributions: We participate in quarterly distributions of surplus commodities at the National Guard Armory in conjunction with Randolph County Social Services.

7.) Underprivileged Children: We provide funds for any child in the Asheboro City School system to have a new pair of shoes if a nurse or guidance counselor determines there is a legitimate need.

8.) Scholarships: We provide the money to award (typically $1,500 each) college scholarships to three seniors in the five Randolph County high schools.

9.) Farm-City Night: We invite the local farmers for our meeting on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. They reciprocate with a pig-picking in May.

10.) Sponsored Youth: We sponsor a Key Club (a Kiwanis Club for high school boys and girls) at Asheboro High School and Builders Clubs at the Alternative School and North Asheboro Middle School.

11.) Youth Athletics: We sponsor little league baseball, basketball, football, and girl's softball.

12.) Youth Services: We usually contribute to the YMCA, Boy and Girl Scouts, 4-H, D.A.R.E., and Boys and Girls Home.

13.) Capital Campaigns: We have helped with the campaigns of the Salvation Army, Randolph Hospital, Hospice, and the YMCA.

14.) Community Services: We have recently made contributions to the Randolph Prison Chaplaincy Program, Randolph Senior Adult Association, and the Randolph Arts Guild.

Club Organization

Our club is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the club President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Past-President, and seven elected Directors. All officers (except the Secretary) and directors are elected in the spring of each year by the Club. Directors serve two-year staggered terms. The Vice-President automatically becomes President, and the Secretary is elected by the Board of Directors.

Kiwanis International is divided into 46 districts in 91 nations. Our club is in the Carolinas District, which consists of all clubs in North and South Carolina. The head of the district is the Governor. The Governor is elected each year in August. The home of the Governor is rotated among three regions comprised of eastern North Carolina, western North Carolina, and all of South Carolina.

Within the Carolinas District are 28 divisions, of which we are a member of the 8" Division. Each division is led by a Lt. Governor. Our division consists of the 12 clubs in Randolph, Guilford, and Davidson Counties.

Inter-Club Visits

When we visit another nearby club (usually in our division) with at least four members, this is called an inter-club. Every member is encouraged to participate in at least one inter-club visit each year. Much can be learned by seeing how other clubs operate.

Publications

Kiwanis Klarion: This is our club bulletin and is published bi-weekly. This newsletter will keep you i nformed o f upcoming events and let you know what you missed if you were not able to attend a meeting.

Carolina Kiwanian: This newspaper is published quarterly and will keep you informed of activities in the Carolinas district.

Kiwanis Magazine: Published monthly by Kiwanis International. In addition to information about Kiwanis happenings, this magazine contains many articles of general interest.

The Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado.

To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
