Favorite Hat

Communities in Schools of Randolph County sent us a thank you letter for our club’s recent donation.

Start trying to locate your special hat to wear to our Favorite Hat Day meeting on 3/12/13.  There could be a prize for the winning hat.

After our 3/5/13 meeting we’ll have a board meeting.  One item that’ll come up is a request for a contribution from the Randolph County Mayor’s Committee for Disabled Persons.

Have a great week and we’ll see you 3/5 when our program will be Peter Rieke, Carolinas District Aktion Club Administrator, providing  an update on the status of Aktion activities in the Carolinas District.  Aktion Clubs are service clubs for adults with disabilities.  Joseph Sands gets credit for this program.

Aktion

Are you ready for AKTION?  Great program tonight about Aktion Clubs.  If you missed the meeting or want to learn more about this Kiwanis Sponsored Leadership Program, click on this link http://www.aktionclub.org/Home.aspx

Charles Lee wants to remind everyone to park away from the Armory on Pancake Day.  You can park in the DOT lot next door, the golf course lot, or the Jaycee lot, but not the Armory lot, the lot across from the Armory, or anywhere close the the Armory on Country Club Drive.  Please tell anyone you know who will be working at Pancake Day.  We need to keep all available parking for customers.

Kiwanis One Day

Recently our Kiwanis Club provided me with the opportunity to attend the Kiwanis Carolinas District Mid Year conference that was held in Wilmington, NC.  Thank you for this opportunity.  Below is some info gained which I would like to share with you.

Kiwanis One Day: usually is the first Saturday in April, is a non fundraising event, is meant to do a job/task that needs to be done in the community in one day or about five hours, is opportunity to draw attention to Kiwanis benefiting the community by trying to get the paper, TV or radio to cover the event, could be done by working along with another group such as a key club, Kiwanis club or another service club (we’ll have more to say about this later when we share our plans for this year’s event)

Connecting with Our Community: as we evaluate potential projects we should ask ourselves what can we do to make our community better?, where can our efforts/dollars do the most good in the community?

Have a great week and we’ll see you 2/26 when our program will be provided by Dr. Lynley Holt, a geriatric physician, with White Oak Family Practice.  Don Monroe has arranged this program for us.

A thought to ponder this week could be: Do we see difficulties in every opportunity or opportunities in every difficulty?

Motivational Crumley

Direct and plain-spoken, with southern charm and humor, renowned speaker and successful businessman BOB CRUMLEY laid out the Three Simple Yet Difficult Rules of Success in his new book and keynote speech, See The End First.  It was very enlightening.

2013 Kick's off with outstanding Monarch Presentation

After not meeting for the last two weeks due to holidays, it was great to get back together for good food and fellowship.  Bob Terhune introduced his wife, Dr. Peggy Terhune, as our speaker.  Peggy is CEO of Monarch, a non-profit organization that provides support for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.  They also help people with mental health and substance abuse challenges.  Monarch impacts our community in many ways.

At the board meeting, we officially launched the Kiwanis Club Satellite that has been in the process of being formed over the last few months.  This new satellite of our club will meet twice a month, have a different dues structure, and help us with our service and fund-raising projects.  Thanks to Ritchie Buffkin and Jessica Coltrane for helping to get this organized.  Now we all need to get busy recruiting new members for both the club and the club satellite, depending upon someone's commitment level to meeting attendance.

NCSU Professor shares outlook on economy

Our speaker was Dr. Michael Walden, economics professor at NCSU.  Dr. Walden is a Recipient of the 2010 University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Public Service.  He can be contacted at 919-515-4671; e-mail: michael_walden@ncsu.edu.  He shared an interesting perspective on the economy, indicating that the "Great Recession" was due to the housing market bubble that burst in mid 2000's and the related effect on the financial sector.  Housing accounts for 15% of the economy.  The good news is that the economy has slowly recovered, housing values are back on the rise (historic rate was 3%,) and unemployment is down.  Housing debt is down paving the way for improved consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of the economy.  He was fairly confident that a deal will be reached on the fiscal cliff to avoid drastic changes to taxes and government spending.  Learn more from the Winter 2012 economic outlook.

In other business, David Smith is looking for a few volunteers for the pancake breakfast this Saturday, 12/8/12 at the airport.  Dean Lail still has a few spots open for bell ringing for the Salvation Army.  Barb Swanson has tickets for the Tour of Homes.

On Dec. 11 we’ll meet on the first floor of Magnolia on Worth.  The doors will open at 6 PM.

Have a great week and we’ll see you 12/11 when our program will be Dr. Mike Loomis from the NC Zoo.  This program has been arranged by Eddie Pugh.

History of Asheboro

Our Speaker on 11/27/12 was Felix Ward with the City of Asheboro, discussing the history of Asheboro.  Recorded history about the county dates back to 1670.  Asheboro was incorporated in 1796 on 50 acres given by Sam Henley.  The Courier-Tribune produced a book called Time Pieces that has much of the history in photos.  Felix also drew on photos and info in a scrapbook by compiled by Archie Burkhead's Dad.  The municipal golf course was a WPA project in 1937.  Money to build McCrary ball park and Memorial Park was post war federal money.  It was an interesting program with lots of questions and comments.
